“anak-anak semua di sini tidur bersama kami para perawat dan suster,” kata Suster Agnes, pengelola sekaligus pengasuh Yayasan Bhakti Luhur Jl. PUtri Candramidi, Rabu, (4/8).

Disabled Children’s longing for Parents love

“All the kids here sleep and study in the same housing with their nurses and nuns”, said Sister Agnes, who supervises and coordinates the Bhakti Luhur Foundation at Jl. Putri Candramidi.

Sister Agnes added that within the same housing, the kids and their guardian nurses live as ‘one family’, which could create a challenge to the whole process. For example, when the kids are to urinate or defecate.

“There’s this one story when one of the kids just could not wake up, then we all hurried to bring him to the hospital. To our surprise, upon arrival at the hospital; he immediately opened up his eyes and stepped out of the vehicle. You know what? He was looking inside for a television,” said Agnes, smiling.

Bhakti Luhur at Jl. Putri Candramidi was founded in 2005 as a subsidiary of Bhakti Luhur Foundation Kotabaru, Pontianak (founded 2001). The Candramidi branch took care of all-male kids, whilst the Kotabaru branch serves only female ones. She added that there are 2 nuns and 3 nurses to nurture 7 disabled kids as well as 8 normal peers.

These kids have been scheduled study sessions to increase their knowledge. Every Tuesday and Thursday there are pre-school (kindergarten) classes and every Monday/Friday there is Elementary School equivalence. They were trained English language, as well. All the teachers go to teach directly in their house. “The normal kids just couldn’t stay quiet, and they move around a lot. Their disabled peers are the ones who would listen and study, ” she acknowledged.

Among the kids with special needs, there are only two who can communicate quite well; they are, Iwan (28 y.o), and Hendra (27 y.o). They receive special treatments as well as daily physiotherapy to recondition and increase their adaptibility to their surroundings. When interviewed by Borneo Tribune, Iwan agreed to sing a spiritual song and Bhakti Luhur Hymn. “Honestly, through that song I would like to say out loud my feelings, my longing for parents,” says Iwan.

Bhakti Luhur Foundation West Kalimantan is a subsidiary of Bhakti Luhur Malang, East Java, under the spiritual leadership of Father Paul Janssen, CM
