Small children, though handicapped, have a charm
Small children have their own charm, so even though they are handicapped and mentally retarded so that it is difficult to be educated, Sisters of Bhakti Luhur with a will and a high spirit has declared that they are willing to take care of these children.
Even those Sisters were willing to open a community in Merauke, to give service to the children with multi handicap who did not want to be cared by other people.
Archbishop Merauke Mgr Nicolaus Adi Seputra MSC told this thing in his preach in a Mass on 8th of June in St Vincensius de Paul Merauke House, which was an inauguration of that House which was well known as an orphanage.
The Archbishop who was accompanied by Pastor Anton Panumbi MSC, Pastor Lukas Sugeng Pr and Pastor Stefanus Tri Supriantono MSC quoted Mat 19:14, “Let those children come to me and don’t hinder them, because those persons are the ones who own the Heaven Kingdom”.
After his preach, the archbishop gave a blessing to the house together with the land where the School for the Handicapped would be built. Chapel and any holy things (crucifix, statue, tabernacle, cup, and other holy things) were also given a blessing.
This event was also attended by the Secretary of Merauke Regional Government Joseph Rinto Radiatmaka, Third Assistant of the said Secretary, Mr. Nico Freddy Talubun, the head of the Social Department Ode Noer Ladamay, the head of Tourism Department Vincentius Mekiuw, the Head of the Planning Department, Daniel Pauta, and the head of the Education Department for Merauke Region Patar Simanjuntak and all the Sisters and Brothers, pastors, donators, invitee, the congregation and the parents of the children who was taken care.
In her welcome speech, Sister Lucia said that this new building would be used to take care, train and educate children who were mentally backward. “They are also the children of God and have the same rights as the normal children”
It was explained that, Bhakti Luhur and “Asuhan Luhur Masyarakat Allah”, were founded on 27 September 1960 with the logo of a crucifix without corpus by Pastor Janssen CM. The corpus, according to Pastor Janssen, is the Sisters, who must be crucified every day in the middle of the handicapped children.
The mentors of Bhakti Luhur consist of three groups, which are Male, Female and Family. The first and second groups has undertaken advises of the New Testament, while the third group has surrendered themselves to serve the weak.
The spirituality of that association is “to share one room, one table, to pray together, to work together with them who work together with us”. The room of the Sisters of Bhakti Luhur is the room of the handicapped children, and the choir of the Sister of Bhakti Luhur is the choir of the handicapped children.
According to Mgr Adi Seputra MSC, in opening the Bhakti Luhur community in Merauke, the head of that association had sent Sister Martina, Sister Eva and Sister Yustina, the first pioneers of that association to his diocese. After staying temporarily for three months in the diocese dormitory, in the fourth month, they will stay in their own house, even to open a new community in Tanah Miring SP.7 and will open a new community again in this year in District Mindiptanah Boven Digoel Province.
He expected that his congregation would pray Holy Mary one time for all the pastoral workers who were in his diocese. “Hopefully through Holy Mary, all pastoral workers, especially all the pastors who work in the backward area could get the strength in serving their congregation”.
Representing the Head of Merauke Regional Government, Rinto Radiatmaka passed his gratitude to all the Sisters who were willing to come and work in Merauke. “We expects that this community not only open the House in this area only but also in other places. The Regional Government will support in order that the Social Department could provide attention and their best support to this House.”
The government had promised to provide special service to the children who need special attention, especially with regards the means and the facility.
However, it was stressed, that the service to the society would not be provided to the town areas only but would also be provided to all areas in Kimaam, Okaba, Bupul, Ulilin and also Waropko.
“The service to the people who lives in kampongs needs to be specially provided”.
The Secretary of the Regional Area of Merauke then gave an operational fund to the head of the orphanage of St. Vincentius de Paul Merauke in the amount of Rp 100.770.000,-.
After finishing with his welcome speech, Rinto Radiatmaka opened the cover of the name plank “the orphanage of Santo Vincensius de Paul Merauke”.
